For 10 days you will discover the very best of Croatia on this self drive holiday and Split is a fantastic place to start your adventure. Croatia's second-largest city, Split is a great place to see Dalmatian life as it’s really lived. Always buzzing, this exuberant city has just the right balance between tradition and modernity.
Step inside Diocletian’s Palace (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and you’ll see dozens of bars, restaurants and shops thriving amid the atmospheric old walls where Split has been humming along for thousands of years. From Split you will move on to Zadar home to a historic old town of Roman ruins, medieval churches, cosmopolitan cafes and quality museums set on a small peninsula, Zadar is an intriguing city. It’s not too crowded and its two unique attractions – the sound-and-light spectacle of the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation – need to be seen and heard to be believed.
Next stop is the stunning Plitvice lakes, a 295-sq.-km forest reserve in central Croatia. It's known for a chain of 16 terraced lakes, joined by waterfalls, that extend into a limestone canyon. Walkways and hiking trails wind around and across the water, and an electric boat links the 12 upper and 4 lower lakes. The latter are the site of Veliki Slap, a 78m-high waterfall. Once you have experienced the magic of Plitvice you will head to Opatija. Opatija was the most chic seaside resort for the Austro-Hungarian elite during the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire . Although it lost a lot of its sheen during the Yugoslav period, Opatija has spruced itself up in the last decade and once again attracts a mainly mature crowd, drawn to its grand spa hotels, spectacular location and agreeable year-round climate.
The final leg of your journey will be to Pula, situated near the base of the Istrian peninsula, Pula is known for its protected harbour, beach-lined coast and Roman ruins. The population of Pula stands at just over 62,000 making it the largest city in Istria. Its most famous attraction, the well preserved Roman amphitheatre, is one of the most famous sights in the whole of Croatia. From Pula you will head to the airport for your return Journey.
