The proud city of Sibenik sits at the place where the Krka River reaches the sea, on the best protected natural harbour in the central Adriatic. First mentioned in 1066 in documents issued by King Petar Kresimir, Sibenik was founded over 1000 years ago. Take a stroll through its streets, alleyways and squares, and some of the most precious works of art in Dalmatia will appear right before you. Those same streets become the stage for the colourful Sibenik Medieval Fair held every year in July.
Sibenik is best known as the home of Croatia’s most impressive church, the Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral of St. Jacob, built in the 15 & 16th Century, whose dome of white stone dominates the city. This magnificent cathedral has earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List and lies just underneath the fortress walls of the town in the old part of Sibenik.
