Opatija is a Croatian coastal town on the Adriatic Sea. The Lungomare is a promenade that snakes along the coastline, offering views of the town and neighboring islands. Opatija may be small with just 12,000 inhabitants, however, there are plenty of interesting things to see and do during a visit. Head to the seaside and take a photo of Opatija's most famous statue, "The Girl with the Seagull" placed on a rock and gazing out to sea. The Museum of Croatian Tourism is another interesting attraction to head for, celebrating the countries rich past. Just an hour's drive away if the marked hiking trails of the Risjnak National Park with beautiful waterfalls, lakes and gorges.
Each year during the first week of December, Opatija hosts the annual Chocolate Festival, where chocolate seems to overtake everything with a fair, special menus, special cakes and beautiful Christmas decorations. Opatija is also home to the museum of chocolate at Choco World which includes fun workshops. Another famous event is the Advent Festival by the sea which takes place from late November until the end of December.
In the evening work up your appetite by taking a stroll along the riviera's romantic promenade before heading to a magnificent Mediterranean restaurant on the seafront as you watch the boats sail by.
